A flight from Hamilton to Wellington made an unscheduled landing in Palmerston North this morning after pilots noticed an odour in the cockpit.

Air New Zealand spokeswoman Brigitte Ransom said pilots on flight NZ5031 noticed "an unusual smell".

They were directed to land at Palmerston North Airport where firefighters from the city were placed on standby about 8.15am.

The plane landed without incident and its passengers completed their journey to the Capital by bus.
