A Czech tourist was wishing her family a happy New Year when she was bottled by a drunk partygoer.
The young woman ended her New Year celebrations with glass sticking out of wounds to her arm and abdomen.
Cajun Jet Waikato, 26, was yesterday ordered to pay $1000 to the woman, who left New Zealand after the incident.
He was sentenced to six months' community detention and 12 months' supervision for wounding with intent to injure when he appeared in the Napier District Court.
Waikato began celebrating New Year in the afternoon of December 31 with three bourbon and colas and 20 "spots" of cannabis, according to the police summary. He continued drinking into the night and shared a cannabis cigarette at his cousin's Napier home.
In the next street, the Czech woman was at a party with friends. She left just after midnight to find a quiet spot to call her family in the Czech Republic.
She stopped on the footpath in Konini Cres, across the road from another party.
A woman from that party yelled at her while she was on the phone. She was "blissfully unaware" of any confrontation while talking on the phone, the summary says.
Waikato ran on to the street and threw a quart bottle of beer at her. The bottle shattered on her arm.
Waikato told police he thought there was an altercation between the two women. Partygoers intervened and led Waikato away while the injured woman was taken home.
Police said the woman had subsequently cut her working holiday short and returned to the Czech Republic.
