Hurricanes player Adam Hill is auctioning a signed jersey on Trade Me to raise money for his brother Jeff, who is in Christchurch Hospital with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain after an assault in Ashburton early on Sunday.

"He was waiting to get a taxi home after catching up with some friends when the unprovoked attack occurred," Adam said.

"My brother was brutally assaulted and left lying on the pavement with severe head injuries."

Doctors did not know how long Jeff, 31, would have to be in hospital, he said.

"He has post-traumatic amnesia and, until this goes, they cannot fully diagnose how severe the damage is."

Jeff will soon be a father for the second time. He and his wife, Katie, have a 1-year-old son, Flynn, and are expecting another baby in May.

On Wednesday, Ashburton police arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the assault.
