A trio of thieves who made off with a Wellington cafe's child cancer fundraising box have been caught red-handed on camera.

Courtenay Place gelato shop Kaffee Eis has posted the video online in the hopes keen-eyed Wellingtonians will recognise the men, including one caught on CCTV making off with a charity box from their shop counter.

The theft is thought to have happened on Wednesday, but it only came to light when Burger King restaurant employees found the emptied box in their toilets and established through the Child Cancer Foundation that it belonged to the nearby gelato shop.

Burger King supplied their security footage of the men carrying the charity box through the fast food restaurant and into their toilet, and Kaffee Eis were able to match up their footage of one of the men in the store swiping the box.

Kaffee Eis owner Karl Tiefenbacher said the footage was clear enough that he hoped Wellingtonians might recognise the culprits.

The gelato store is offering a reward of $100 to be donated to the Child Cancer Foundation.

There might have only been $30-$50 in the box but Mr Tiefenbecher said it was sickening to think people would steal from child cancer victims.

''To me it's the principle of it. If you can take that, then that's just the tip of the iceberg.''
