Building a loo shaped like a strapping bull's bottom so that people can "Leave it all behind in Bulls" is not something Rangitikei District Council is prepared to fork out for.

It would cost at least $226,000 to build a public toilet where visitors walk up a bull's tail and through his backside to find male toilets in one buttock and females' in the other.

It was a vulgar concept that was not worth the money, Bulls ward councillor Jill Strugnell said.

The council has said it will not spend any money on new public toilets in Bulls within the current financial year and even after that does not consider new loos for the town a priority.

Bulls' residential ratepayers were burdened with a 30 per cent rate increase this year.

But money aside, Bulls as a town needs to be careful it doesn't over-state the animal theme, Mrs Strugnell said. "Taihape has a gumboot but doesn't make everything in the town a gumboot."

The town is already riddled with signs making bull puns like "memor-a-bull," and, "const-a-bull" a theme that Bulls and District co-ordinator Bronwyn Meads said has created a point of difference for the town and needs to be reinforced.

At least 12,000 people pass through the town each day and she estimated about 30 per cent of travellers use Bulls as a pit-stop.

"When people are travelling they remember a place based on how nice or how bad the public toilets were. We need these toilets for our town, we will reap the benefits as people stop and then go on to have a browse and hopefully stop for lunch."

She is seeking feedback from the community on whether or not they want the iconic toilets.

A suggestion...maybe build one of these in Chicago, Illinois, at the United Center. A great way to support "da Bulls"!!!

Having worked in Bulls not far from the present toilets, which badly need knocking down and replacing, I am 150% behind the new toilets in the shape of a bull's bottom going ahead and know it would boost tourism no end! Perhaps be like Taupo and charge a fee for using said toilets and the revenue from that can go back into it. Go Bulls you have my total support!!!!!! (always have for that matter!)

Mrs Strugnell seems to have her info off. Visitors would NOT be walking up a bulls tail into its bottom to get to the toilet facility, you would enter from the side (where the hip would be), the tails is apparently a jutter bar.

The BULL theme is a great idea. At the end of the day, the current toilets are not acceptable in their current state.

That would be awesome! I love the Bulls theme - with the places all having "consta-bull" "befrienda-bull" etc, and I think this is just another cool addition.

#3, I totally agree! It will make people stop, and the amount of people, be it tourists from near or far, will get pictures. They will be fun and entertaining, and people will love it!

I personally think this is a great idea and would be great for Bulls if it's done properly. For example, It would be pointless to build these awesome facilities and then not have a good-sized parking area attached, etc. Just practical stuff, which is so often missed when councils work on these sorts of projects.

I think the payoff over the long term for the community would far outweigh the expenditure required and there are always public & corporate sponsorship opportunites here. (Great advertising for businesses - possibly inside the building on noticeboards or advertising murals on walls like in airports & shopping malls).

It should be quite manageable to make the facilites self-funding in some way or another, again - if done correctly. Get community people involved and business people.

In short, I love the idea and even though I kind of understand where the anti-ideas are coming from, I really feel it would be a shame for a bit of small-minded, short-term thinking to hamper such creativity.

You see short-term thinking screwing things up all over NZ, just look at other projects such as Transmission Gully in the Wellington/Kapiti Region and Toll Roads & Bridges that could be Great Assets in the long-term. Anyway, It's Just my opinion...

In the 90's, I used to travel between Wellington and Auckland and was grateful of the "pit stop" provided by Rangitikei District Council. I do feel that the township need to provide facility for travellers to have a cup of coffee and a quick snack in 15 minutes.

There is one very important reason not stopping at Bull for refreshment: You don't want to have several big truck & trailers ahead of you while you are having your snacks. You could be breathing their diesel fumes all the way to Taupo.

haha, funny as! Though, why it would cost $226k is beyond me, is that including the land?

For heavens sake - Its a bit of fun.

Its a great idea.

Its innovative, its brave, its thoroughly worthwhile, its doabull

What else Ms Strugnell? Your ideas please?

Children would be clammering to get their parents to stop.

Backpackers getting their pictures taken - no Facebook page would complete without one.

Obviously the expenditure will have some benchmark the project is expected to attain, and if it doesn't do that in say 3 years have another look at it and do something else.

For mine, Ms Strugnell is missing her mandate and should simply go.

Get a life Mrs Strugnell. Anything to make a town memorabull is desirabull for business and ancillaries. They all provide you with rates to spend.
