Sewer problems force emergency road closure
A collapsed sewer forced the closure of a busy section of road in Wellington this afternoon.
Ruahine St between the Mt Victoria Tunnel and Goa St was closed about 3.40pm after a damaged sewer undermined the road, an NZ Transport Agency spokesman said.
The busy stretch of road in Hataitai has since reopened for peak hour traffic, but is closed from 7.30pm.Traffic would also be diverted via Taurima St and Moxham Ave through Haitaitai although motorists are advised to travel via Newtown and Wellington Road, or Oriental Parade and Evans Bay if possible, the spokesman said.
It will be closed overnight, and traffic diverted around the bays.
Traffic had been badly delayed on both sides of the tunnel this afternoon.
People should allow extra time for delays, particularly if they have a flight to catch, he said.
Council spokesman Richard MacLean said the sewer was in a "state of collapse". He urged motorists to avoid using the Mt Victoria tunnel at "all costs".
The work was expected to be completed overnight and the road reopened before the morning rush.
