An elderly woman was injured when she lost of control of a car in her own driveway and smashed into a house in Miramar this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the crash in Darlington Rd about 1.10pm.

Kilbirnie station officer Dave Gilroy said the woman had been moving her car out onto the road down a driveway when the crash happened.

Firefighters cut a door off the badly damaged car to make it easier to remove the injured woman.

She had suffered leg, chest and facial injuries and was taken to Wellington Hospital, Mr Gilroy said.

The house suffered ''a bit of bruising'' with only a few weather boards damaged, he said.

It was unknown what caused the woman to lose control of her car.

The Wellington road policing unit is investigating.
