The Fire Service is at the scene of a chemical spill near Hastings.

Between 300 and 400 litres of an unknown chemical has spilled inside a building at an industrial park in Whakatu, a fire service spokesman said.

Nine fire engines were at the scene, including a command centre and hazardous material unit. The alarm was raised about 3:35pm.

It was not yet clear what type of chemical was involved.
