A farmer has been taken to hospital this afternoon after being hit by a bull.

The 65-year-old was in a set of cattle yards at Pourerere, about 45 kilometres south east of Waipukurau, in central Hawke's Bay, when the incident happened this afternoon, emergency services said.

The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter were called out about 2.30pm and airlifted the man from a farmhouse to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital for further treatment.
