A Frenchman on his honeymoon is in a serious condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital after the campervan he was driving collided with a logging truck.

The 27-year-old Parisian was driving a Mercedes campervan with his wife north of Napier when the collision occurred at 5.30pm yesterday.

Napier senior sergeant Dan Foley said the man was turning north from State Highway 5 onto the Napier-Wairoa Road after driving from Taupo when he mistakenly drove into the wrong lane after making the turn.

On seeing a southbound Kenworth logging truck approach the man took evasive action, steering the campervan to the right then the left, but was unable to avoid the truck, which hit the front right of the campervan.

The man suffered a dislocated femur and several other broken bones. His wife, who was in the passenger's seat suffered minor injuries.

The truck driver suffered bruises to his legs.
