A young man is fighting for his life after his car and a truck collided in Hawke's Bay.

The accident happened on Stock Rd near Hastings at about 9:30am on Saturday.

It appeared the car lost control on a corner and crossed the centre line, hitting the south-bound truck, Senior Sergeant Fleming of Hawke's Bay police said.

The sole occupant of the car, a man in his 20s, has been transported to Wellington hospital where he remains in a serious condition in intensive care.

The driver and passenger of the truck were traumatised but unhurt, Mr Fleming said.
