A man is dead after a house was totally destroyed by fire in rural Hawke's Bay.

A 111 call alerted the Fire Service to the blaze yesterday evening, Fire Service central communications shift manager David Meikle said.

When the Bay View Volunteer Fire Bridge arrived at 5.30pm, the house on Darky's Spur Rd in Tangoio, 20km north of Napier, was largely destroyed.

"It has been pretty much burned to the ground," Mr Meikle said.

A 57-year-old man was found dead inside and relatives were being notified.

Fire Safety officers and police are at the scene of the fire to investigate the cause.
