A 26-year-old man is in Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital this morning after his car went over the side of a lookout last night.

He was thrown free from his car and found 50 metres below the cliff at about 9pm on Te Mata Peak Rd.

The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter flew the man to hospital for treatment for multiple serious injuries.
