Police have arrested a 16-year-old Napier youth and charged him in relation to a sexual assault on a teenage girl last week.

The youth will appear in the Napier Youth Court tomorrow.

The 17-year-old victim was allegedly threatened with a spanner and forced into a public toilet where she was sexually assaulted, police say.

The victim was walking along Maadi Rd in Onekawa, Napier, about midnight on Saturday when she was approached by a male.

She was found by a member of the public in a distressed state after the attack. She did not require hospital treatment.

The spanner was found at the scene and was being forensically examined by police.

Police say there was a great response from the public after security camera photos were published in media and on Facebook.

Information provided had been a great help to the investigating team.
