A man tried to rob a Napier dairy last night armed with a boning knife.

But when the shop assistant refused to hand over any money the man left empty-handed.

Police are looking for a NZ European man who wore black jeans, Aviator sunglasses and a black hoodie pulled up over his head.

He had been loitering outside the dairy on the corner of Creagh St and Te Awa Ave before attempting to rob it about 8pm last night.
