The man accused of hitting a 5-year-old boy and driving off entered no plea when he appeared in Hastings District Court today.
Joshua Manukapei Watson, 27, of Hastings has been charged with failing to stop and ascertain injury on August 13.
He was arrested near his home this morning after failing to appear in court yesterday.
Watson handed himself in to Flaxmere police station last week after pressure was applied by the community. It is alleged he knocked Kayzah-Shae Wairama off his sister's bike outside his Hastings home last Tuesday night.
The young boy suffered serious head injuries and was flown to Starship Children's Hospital in Auckland.
He has since been moved from the paediatric intensive care unit and was in a stable condition.
Police were making further inquiries to see if more charges would be laid. The car involved in the hit-and-run had been found.
Watson was remanded on bail to next month.
