An 18-year-old injured in Hastings early this morning will not speak to police about the incident.
Detective Brendan Campbell of Hastings police said the cause of the man's injury was undetermined at this stage.
It was earlier described by police communications as a stab wound to the head, but that was unconfirmed, Mr Campbell said.
"I can't really say much more than that. He's not talking to us so I can't really confirm anything further."
It was unlikely there would be further information available this afternoon as they were yet to speak with the man, he said.
"That's as far as it has gone today."
