One-year-old in stable condition after falling in pond at Hastings showgrounds

A 1-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after being pulled unresponsive from a pond at Hawke's Bay A&P Showgrounds on Sunday afternoon.

A police spokeswoman said the boy was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in a critical condition after the incident, about 4.30pm. 

The hospital said that, about two hours later, his condition had improved to stable.

It is understood the boy was at the showgrounds in Hastings with his parents when he fell into the pond.

He was pulled out, and people at the scene started CPR till St John paramedics arrived.

They stabilised him and took him to hospital in a responsive state.

The shallow pond, popular for feeding eels, is not fenced.
