A man was stung up to 100 times when a queen bee flew down his shirt and her drones attacked this afternoon in northern Hawke’s Bay
The 43-year-old man had stopped at Putorino, between Napier and Wairoa on State Highway 2, to check on the hives he was transporting.
He was found running away from his bee-engulfed truck by another truck driver coming in the other direction.
The pair flagged down a passing ambulance who called for backup.
He was airlifted by the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter
to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital in a critical condition but was now in a stable condition.
Helicopter crewman Geoff Taylor said the man had gone in to anaphylactic shock.
‘‘50 or 60 stings would be enough to give a venom overload – the man was well-flushed, he looked like he was sunburnt,’’ Mr Taylor said.
