Kiwibank has announced plans to set up a new office in Hastings, prompted by the recent series of earthquakes and extreme weather events around the country.

The new office will employ more than 100 staff, supplementing the state-owned bank's Wellington base where more than 1000 staff are headquartered.

Kiwibank chief executive Paul Brock said the bank had reviewed where it provided core services after recent earthquakes, weather events and the risks of fire or gas leaks.

"We provide most transactional services in our Wellington head office with some services based in Auckland," he said.

"The new office will ensure that there is a seamless continuity of business-critical services, even if something has caused disruption at Auckland or Wellington."

Kiwibank plans to have the Hastings office up and running by October.
