Police have released the name of the man who died in a helicopter crash near Gisborne yesterday.

He was Donald Carlton Kain, 53, a silviculture supervisor from Gisborne.

The Civil Aviation Authority has now taken over the crash scene and will be investigating the cause of the crash.

The pilot of the helicopter remains in Gisborne Hospital ICU in a serious condition with multiple injuries.
