There was an unnamed extra on board as Katie McVean was crowned champion show jumper at Horse of the Year in Hastings.

Her unborn first child, due in July, went round with her as she jumped a second clear round on Dunstan Springfield to win the JB Olympic Cup.

The 27-year-old from Mystery Creek was all smiles as she held the Olympic Cup for the fifth time. This time she beat the current world champion, Philippe Le Jeune, from Belgium.

The win kicked off an exciting few weeks for McVean. She is marrying fiance Jackson Laurie next weekend.

Director Kevin Hansen said he was confident crowd numbers would "far exceed" last year's 74,000 with the Eventing and Cross-Country held at the main showgrounds for the first time.

"I've said it before: We don't want to be just the best show in Australasia, we want to be the best show in the world."

Meanwhile, a collision between a horse float and a vehicle trapped a motorist on the outskirts of Napier yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters freed the motorist, who was not hurt.
