Truck driver trapped by live wires
BREAKING NEWS REPORTER
A truck driver warned people not to try and rescue him after he hit live power lines in Naenae this morning.
The Fire Service was alerted to the incident on Rata Street at 10.43am after a man forgot to retract a crane on the back of his truck and reversed into the power lines.
The driver was unable to get out of the truck as the power lines were down and there was a danger of electrocution.
Resident Brian Betti said: "I heard a big bang and saw a huge flash."
Police communication spokesman Inspector Ken Climo said power authorities had since isolated the power and the driver had been freed from the vehicle. Power was out to the whole of Rata Street.
"He did the sensible thing by remaining in the cab of his vehicle and warning other people to stay away," Mr Climo said.
He was shaken, but unharmed.
Emergency services were at the scene.
