Dead teen found by river named
HUTT VALLEY REPORTER
Police have released the name of a teenager whose body was found on the banks of the Hutt River yesterday.
He was Michael Lafou, 16, of Naenae.
Acting officer in charge of the Hutt Valley CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton said a post-mortem examination was carried out this morning.
"A preliminary cause of death is yet to be established at this stage and further tests will be carried out in due course, however, Michael's death is not being treated as suspicious."
It was expected to be several weeks before the test results were expected back.
Police were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr Lafou's death, including his movements on Tuesday evening.
"We are speaking with witnesses and family members and are currently in the process of reviewing Hutt City Council CCTV footage of the area. There are several hours of footage to review and this is expected to take some time to complete," Mr Thornton said.
Police were speaking with a person they believed was with Mr Lafou on Tuesday evening.
"But (we) are still seeking anyone else who was either in the vicinity of the Hutt Riverbank, near the Riverside Carpark on Tuesday night or early yesterday morning or who saw Michael on Tuesday evening."
Police were providing support to Michael's family.
