Three teenagers have been arrested after a high-speed police chase in a stolen vehicle this morning.

The pursuit began when police first tried to stop a suspected stolen vehicle in Stokes Valley about 2.00am and the driver fled.

Police chased the driver along State Highway 2, bound for Wellington.

The pursuit lasted close to 25 minutes and reached speeds of up to 140kph.

The chase ended in Ngauranga, when the fleeing driver stopped the car and ran off on foot.

He was caught a short time later with the help of police dogs.

The two passengers, aged 18 and 16, were arrested at the scene.

The 18-year-old also had a warrant for his arrest and the 16-year-old was breaching bail conditions.

The 17-year-old driver has been charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and driving with excess breath alcohol, among other charges.

Sergeant Pete Theobald of police central communications said in a statement all three people were being held in custody and would appear at the Lower Hutt District Court later this morning.
