A teenager suffered a fractured skull and swelling on the brain when he fell while car-surfing.

The 18-year-old man, whose lives with his parents in Tawa, fell from the car in the Kaitoke campground, Upper Hutt about 7pm, Saturday, police say.

Wellington Free Ambulance team operations manager Helen Berry said the teen suffered serious head injuries when he fell from the moving car.

His condition was upgraded to critical while he was flown to Wellington Hospital.

He remains in a serious condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.

Hutt Valley area commander Inspector Mike Hill said the driver involved in the incident was processed for drink driving. The serious crash unit was investigating what had happened and what charges could be laid, Mr Hill said.

He urged people to be careful in the lead-up to Christmas.

''In policing terms we call this the silly season when we have what are usually sensible people doing life changing things when they are with groups of friends and when alcohol is involved.

''Think of your mates, think of your future.''
