Armed police have arrested a man in Upper Hutt after multiple reports he was seen carrying a pistol in a commercial area.

Senior Sergeant Steve Harwood said the man was spotted with the gun outside Warehouse Stationery on Queen St about 10.30am.

Police armed with guns and Tasers were called in and an arrest was made shortly after 11:30am.

A visiting police officer from New South Wales was understood to have been involved in the arrest.
