The possible attack on a man in Wainuiomata by a swarm of wasps will remain a mystery for now.
Emergency services have done all they can to find the man who was heard yelling for help near Parenga St before 11.30am.
Wellington Free Ambulance operations team manager Mike Sunderland said the service was called to the scene after a person heard a man on a neighbouring property yelling for help.
There was a swarm of bees or wasps in the area at the time.
He said there was no sign of the man and everything had been done to track him down.
Emergency services are now standing down.
A police communications spokesman said it was unknown how many times the man had been stung, but "it can be serious for some people".
Ambulance, police and fire service staff were looking for the man in the suburban area, which borders rural land.
