Police are urging motorists to be cautious on the Rimutaka Hill Rd after a diesel spill this morning.

Acting Inspector Bruce Mackay said the spill reached down the entire Wairarapa-bound lane on the Wairarapa side of the hill.

It was not immediately clear how much diesel had spilled.

It was believed a truck driver had left a fuel cap off, though the truck had not been found.

Police were notified of the spill at 7.40am.
