Two men lost overnight in bush in Upper Hutt's Karapoti Valley have been found.

A 50-year-old man and his 23-year-old son in law were reported missing by a relative about 8pm last night.

Search and rescue teams continued searching this morning, and were finally called by the men about 9am.

Police sergeant Guy Callahan said the motor bikers, initially thought on mountain bikes, had made their way out of the bush themselves.

''They pretty much just went in to an area they were a little bit unfamiliar with.''

They had lit a fire for warmth and ''hunkered down'' overnight, making their way out by first light this morning, he said.

They are believed to have walked out the Kapiti coast side of the Akatarawa Forest..
