A pedestrian has been hit by a van on State Highway 2 in Lower Hutt, in an accident that temporarily closed the southbound lanes.

Police said the accident happened at about 7am on the motorway near the Dowse Dr interchange.

Lower Hutt Police senior sergeant Marc Clausen said a man parked his car near the old Petone Bowling Club and intentionally crossed the motorway.

He was hit by a van, and suffered serious injuries.

The man was transferred to Hutt Hospital, and is in a stable condition.

A diversion was set up for southbound traffic while police investigated the accident, but the lanes have now been re-opened.
