IN COURT: Matthew George Kidman.

The man who kicked his way out of an interview room at the Lower Hutt court before waiting for a court staff member to use a security card to leave the building has been jailed for five months.

Matthew Kidman had pleaded guilty to escaping by kicking out glass in an interview room on August 2 last year.

He waited in a secure area until a staff member unwittingly swiped him out and grabbed a taxi to Naenae.

His escape sparked a manhunt in Lower Hutt before he was stopped in a car in central Wellington later that night.

He had two previous convictions for escaping in 2001 and 2004 although Kidman told the court he thought one was more of an attempt.

Wellington District Court judge Mike Behrens QC said Kidman was only out a brief time but his previous convictions had to be taken into account.

Kidman has been in custody since escaping - about six months - and Crown lawyer Jodie Ongley said he had effectively served his time already.
