A shop assistant who was confronted by a masked man with a gun was able to grab cash from the till and arm herself with a cricket bat.

The man, who had disguised his face with a black bandana, walked into the store in Petone yesterday afternoon and demanded cash, Detective Sergeant Christiaan Barnard said.

The lone shop assistant grabbed cash from the till and ran with the money into a back room where she armed herself with a cricket bat, he said. The man then ran from the dairy. It is unclear whether he took any money.

He was wearing a light grey hoodie and black pants. He had a dark coloured backpack with a red design on the front.

Anyone who saw suspicious activity on Hutt Rd or Richmond St about 2.30pm yesterday is asked to contact the Hutt Valley police on 04 560 2600 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
