The tree stopped the bus from hitting the house.

A rogue bus somehow rolled across a road and into the front yard of a Lower Hutt home, hitting a tree before any damage could be done to the house.

The bus rolled out of the Valley Flyer depot about 5:40 am on Thursday in Stokes Valley, NZ Bus southern region chief operating officer Tonia Haskell said.

Nobody was in the bus, however it appeared that the handbrake was still on, Haskell said.

Bus drivers were at the depot, starting up the buses, when the bus began to roll away.

NZ Bus would investigate how the bus, with its handbrake on, rolled away, she said.

The company would repair any damage to the property and apologised for any distress, Haskell said.

Nobody was hurt.
