A simple mistake in gears saw an elderly woman drive through a brick wall and plate glass window with enough force to shunt a photo copier six metres across the floor.
The accident at Len Hooper Pharmacy, in Epuni, Lower Hutt happened shortly before 1pm today.
Technician Lisa Duncan was in the pharmacy's back room when she heard ''all this revving'' before a car crashed through a brick wall and plate glass window into the shop.
''It was just a horrendous bang. It made the whole shop shake.''
A photocopier in the front window of the shop was shunted six metres across the shop floor.
Stock and the shop was a mess afterwards, she said.
Gold leaf lettering, painted on the window when the shop opened 60 years ago, was destroyed.
But she was forgiving to the elderly woman who had been driving the car.
''It was really just an error in judgment.''
The driver, who was fine after the accident, appeared to have thought the car was in reverse but had actually had the car in drive.
Ms Duncan said the pharmacy was still running despite the chaos this afternoon.
Insurance would cover the damage, she said.
