The Westpac rescue helicopter is taking a man in his 40s to Wellington Hospital with moderate injuries after winching him out of the Akatarawa Valley in Upper Hutt.

A Wellington Free Ambulance spokesman said a person who called emergency services at about 4.30pm had walked 40 minutes out of the bush to raise the alarm after the injured man crashed off his motorbike.

A central communications police spokesman said the injured man was travelling on a 4WD access track near Karapoti when the incident happened.
