The KFC restaurant in Upper Hutt was partially damaged by fire overnight.

Fire Service spokesman Mike Wanoa said damage was caused to the rear of the restaurant on the corner of Queen and Logan streets in Upper Hutt.

The Fire Service received a call about 2.40am.

Mr Wanoa said it was too early to say whether the blaze was suspicious. Fire investigators were present at the restaurant endeavouring to ascertain how the fire started.

He said the rear section of the restaurant was badly damaged.
