A motorcyclist and a car have collided near the Smith and Smith automative glass repair centre on the Esplanade in Petone.

Newlands College student Hayden James, 15, passed the scene soon after the 8am accident took place.

He said it appeared the motorcyclist, who was heading eastwards, turned left off the Esplanade after passing the Smith and Smith factory shop.

"He then collided with a car," James said.

A spokesman for Wellington Free Ambulance said the motorcyclist suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Hutt Hospital's accident and emergency unit suffering from an ankle problem.
