A motorcylist has come off worse in a collision between his bike and a truck and trailer carrying a digger on the Rimutaka Hill Road.

The motorcyclist, estimated to be aged in his 50s, has been flown to Wellington Hospital with serious injuries following the crash which left his bike lying mangled on the hill road.

Featherston fire station chief Colin McKenna said it was not apparent who was at fault in the crash which badly hurt the motorcyclist and left the truck driver shaken but unscathed.

The motorcyclist, who was riding uphill appeared to have collided with the truck's trailer which was carrying a small digger, Mr McKenna said.

The motorcyclist appeared conscious and was lying on the road when emergency services arrived.

"He was pretty lucky, I think, the medics came along pretty early in the piece and helped him. He was certainly in a lot of pain and had some pretty good injuries, I would say," Mr McKenna said.

"The bike was absolutely buggered - excuse my language - it didn't look too great."

The truck driver appeared unhurt but shaken by the crash, he said.

"He looked pretty cut up about it - I felt for him, too, the poor bugger."

Featherston police remain at the scene investigating the cause of the crash.

Wellington Free Ambulance Spokesman Daniel Paul said the man, aged in his late 50s, had suffered serious injuries including multiple fractures to his right arm and "very severe" damage to his lower right leg.

A Wellington Hospital spokesman said the man was in stable condition and would be admitted to the ward.
