The driver of a stolen car tried to flee police but ended up being arrested around the corner from the Lower Hutt Police station this afternoon.

Police senior constable Maurice Partridge said at least one man was arrested after fleeing police in a stolen vehicle shortly before 1pm.

The car stopped near the Pretoria Street and Cornwall Street intersection, about a block away from Lower Hutt Police Station.

The front-right corner of the car and its front bumper were damaged in the chase, possibly by impacting with a police car, Partridge said.

Further details were not yet confirmed.
