An ambulance already transporting an emergency patient came across a cyclist with serious injuries on State Highway 2 in Hutt Valley this morning.

The Wellington Free Ambulance was transporting a patient with a medical condition when they saw a cyclist near the Belmont Domain turnoff, in Lower Hutt, an ambulance spokesman said.

With the existing patient stable, the ambulance stopped to help until a second Wellington Free crew arrived.

It was not clear what had happened to the cyclist, a male in his 50s.

He as taken to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition. He was being assessed in the hospital's emergency department, but was in a stable condition, a hospital spokesman said. 

His bicycle was badly damaged.

The scene was not blocking the highway.
