The man who died in an Upper Hutt gym yesterday has been named as 21-year-old William John Leith.

Leith was a law and commerce student at Victoria University, and had been head boy of Heretaunga College in 2010.

He died on the treadmill at 7.30am at City Fitness gym in Princes St, Upper Hutt.

The gym's regional director, Sam Wagstaff, yesterday said Leith had a pre-existing medical condition, and police are now analysing his medical records.

Leith is survived by, among others, his Upper Hutt-based mother, father and stepmother, a brother, and a sister overseas.
