A crane may be called in to remove a car which crashed over a barrier on State Highway 2 north of Wellington.

The car is blocking one lane of SH2 and NZTA have advised motorists to expect delays.

Inspector Ken Climo said a car had crashed over a barrier north bound near Petone at 12.28pm.

It is unknown if anyone was injured in the crash.

"It looks like it's jumped the barrier and gone into the bank. There's no way they could tow it out. They'll have to lift it out," a fire service spokesman said.
