A woman was rescued off the coast of Waikanae this morning after falling out of her kayak about 150 metres from shore.

The 37-year-old was in the water for about 40 minutes before being rescued by boat.

A rescue helicopter from Palmerston North was called out to assist, as were the Kapiti and Waikanae coastguards.

Craig Pickering, maritime police senior launch master, said was unable to get back in her kayak after tumbling out.

''She was on her own and wearing a lifejacket.

''She was rescued by a boat [and] treated by ambulance on scene at the Waikanae boat club.''
