Two incidents on State Highways one and two have this evening slowed traffic.
A broken-down car in the northbound lane of Hutt Rd near the Petone off-ramp was causing delays to peak hour traffic, and an earlier crash on SH1 near Otaihanga had done the same.
Emergency services were called to the Petone incident about 5.30pm, where a car had stopped with white smoke billowing from its bonnet, Wellington police Sergeant Mark Oliver said.
A fire truck was attending and traffic had slowed as motorists passed the scene.
Earlier, northbound traffic on SH1 was backed up to Raumati and police warned motorists to expect delays after a two-car crash near Otaihanga.
Wellington police Sergeant Mark Oliver said one person had been taken to Wellington Hospital with a sprained neck following the collision. No other injuries were reported.
There were likely to be delays during the evening traffic peak, Mr Oliver said.
The smash happened in a notorious black spot where there have been several serious accidents and at least three fatalities.
The New Zealand Transport Agency started work on $550,000 of safety improvements along 1.9 kilometres of State Highway 1 between Otaihanga Rd and Waikanae in May.
