People driving north of Wellington can expect delays following a car crash on State Highway 1.

Police were called about 4.45pm to a crash involving two cars at the intersection of Beach Rd in Paekakariki, Police central communications spokesman Sergeant Peter Theobald said.

One person was trapped inside a car but the extent of injuries was not known.

The crash was cleared from the road about 5:25pm, the NZTA said.

Meanwhile, police were urging motorists to take care over the Rimutaka Hill Rd where snow had started to fall. 

People who needed to travel over the range should leave sooner rather than later, Mr Theobald said. 

The New Zealand Transport Agency said there was a significant risk the road would be closed tonight as snow flurries were expected to get heavier.
