A disqualified truck driver caused the closure of the Paekakariki Hill Road this afternoon after his truck got wedged under a pine tree.

GPS instructions directed the driver onto the road, which police said was unsuitable for the 20-metre-long truck.

Constable Scott Walker, of Kapiti, said the driver was arrested during the incident for driving while disqualified and only had 23 days lefts of disqualification.

The articulated truck and trailer became stuck around noon about 500m from the summit when the cab was jammed under an overhanging tree branch.

Mr Walker said the truck's dash-mounted GPS system was not at fault.

''It's quite obvious it was his error of judgment.''

It took about an hour to move - signage was put up and motorists had to find alternate routes.

The driver has not been charged over the incident and was escorted down the hill by police traffic units.
