A four-wheel-drive was gutted by a fire near Te Horo this morning, but not before the driver managed to clear most of his possessions from the cab.

A fire service spokeswoman said the 4WD had been northbound on State Highway 1 when it caught fire shortly before 7am.

It was well ablaze when the fire service arrived.

The Mitsubishi Pajero's driver Ken Armstrong said he smelled electrical burning in the cab.

He pulled over and opened the bonnet, discovering a fire in the engine.

Before it could take hold completely he managed to remove everything important from the cab, except for his favourite battery drill.

He had been on his way to work at an Otaki factory.

There were no reported injuries and the vehicle was at the side of the road this morning.

The cause of the fire was unknown.
