Trains between Wellington and Waikanae were cancelled after a KiwiRail van got stuck on the tracks near Paekakariki.

A KiwiRail spokeswoman said the Kapiti line had to be closed just before 10.30am while the van was removed.

The 10.30am service from Waikanae to Wellington and the 11.00am service from Waikanae to Wellington were both cancelled and replaced by buses.

The line re-opened and services resumed about 11.10am.

Fire communications shift manager Mike Wanoa said a KiwiRail work crew had been driving a van on a four-wheel-drive track between State Highway 1 and the railway lines south of Paekakariki when it got a wheel stuck.
