More than $4000 worth of electricity was allegedly stolen to grow cannabis worth more than $100,000 on the Kapiti Coast.

The sophisticated setup was found when police raided a Waikanae Beach home on Tuesday.

Ninety mature cannabis plants were found growing under lights within a plywood-sealed room in a basement.

Police estimate the cannabis was worth more than $100,000.

Electricity had been diverted away from the main power board with an estimated theft of power in excess of $4000.00

A 40-year-old man appeared in Porirua District Court on Wednesday facing charges of cultivation of cannabis, theft of electricity and possession of cannabis for supply.

Detective Matt Campbell said police were pleased with the find, which would make a dent in cannabis supply to the region.
